THE CHILDREN OF THE MINES

THE ALPS HAS SERVED AS AN IMPORTANT SOURCE OF MINERALS THAT HAVE BEEN MINED FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.  MANY OF THESE MINERALS ARE USED IN OUR WATCHES. WHILE THE MINING OF MINERALS HAS PLAYED AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN THE EVOLUTION OF HUMAN CIVILIZATION, THE INDUSTRY ITSELF HAS BEEN MARKED BY AN UNFORTUNATE HISTORY OF HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES AND NEGATIVE SOCIAL IMPACT. ALTHOUGH MODERN DAY LEADERS OF THE INDUSTRY HAVE FOUGHT TO EMBED A STRONG CODE OF ETHICS, THERE STILL REMAIN MANY MINES AROUND THE WORLD THAT RELY ON THE FRUITS OF CHILD LABOR.  CHILD LABORERS  BETWEEN THE AGES OF 8-16 RISK THEIR HEALTH, SAFETY, AND LIVES ON A DAILY BASIS WHILE WORKING LONG HOURS IN DEEP TUNNELS BELOW GROUND. IN AN EFFORT TO IMPROVE THE WELLBEING OF THESE CHILDREN AND PROVIDE THEM WITH BETTER OPPORTUNITIES, MONTÎERE PLEDGES TO DONATE 2.5 PERCENT OF ITS ANNUAL PROFITS TO UNICEF PROGRAMS WITH THE SAME GOAL.
